At the A1 level, learners are complete beginners. They can understand and use basic phrases to satisfy immediate needs. Simple introductions and basic questions about familiar topics are within their grasp, although communication is limited.
Understanding: Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they own. Interaction is very limited unless the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
Speaking: Can communicate in short and simple sentences in familiar situations.
Reading: Can understand familiar names, words and very simple sentences, for example on signs, labels and posters.
